Newbie VLT1 & Editor Question

idc replied the topic: Newbie VLT1 & Editor Question

Hi

If you disconnect the usb cable/power off the vlt with the editor running, the editor will have trouble trying to communicate, especially when you close the editor; as it will try to gracefully close the connection it has with the vlt; which now no longer exists.

If this happens, you may have to end the editor process in task manager to force it to exit.

This will only happen if you change the midi mode/unplug the vlt whilst the editor is still running.

When you mention the Editor software might crash when it loses communication with the VLT, what happens when I disconnect the power cord of the VLT (only way to turn it off)? Won't the "power off" terminate the communication between Editor and the VLT?

Yes,

The Editor needs the midi mode to be USB for it to operate.

Once you have finished using the Editor; you can put the MIDI mode back to midi and also set any PC and CC filters that you may have had in place back.

OK, so if I'm understanding you correctly, it's simply the MIDI "mode" setting...USB for Editor and MIDI for VLT Midi functionality, correct?

When you mention that Editor might crash when the MIDI mode is changed from USB to MIDI, could that possibility be avoided by simply closing the Editor software on the PC before changing the mode on the VLT?

Hi

You could change the Midi Mode to MIDI and then back to USB, I have not tried this as It could have a side effect; where the Editor will crash as it has lost communication with the VLT.
If you were to pull the USB lead this would crash the editor; and you would still need to change the midi mode to MIDI.

Thanks Ian. That does make sense. As a guitar player, my MIDI knowledge is "basic" at best. I think the only time I would need to use my MIDI keyboard would be for a "Notes" preset (when I want very specific/non-standard harmonies). In this case, if the synth is connected to the VLT via MIDI, what settings on the VLT would I need to change to regain MIDI compatibility? Would I just need to unplug the USB cable to "disengage" the Editor from controlling the VLT?

Hi

For the Editor to work, it needs exclusive control of the device by using USB Midi.
Unfortunately in this mode, the standard MIDI port on the VLT will be De-activated; and hence any midi entering the VLT via the standard midi port will not be processed by the VLT.

Hope that make sense.

I'm new to all of this, so please excuse my lack of knowledge.

I assume that my pc running the editor software is connected to the VoiceLive Touch via USB, but I read that certain MIDI settings on are required on the VLT so that it works properly with editor.

When these MIDI settings are made on the VLT and it is connected to the PC, are there any issues/problems with using a MIDI keyboard (for instance, with one of the "Notes" presets) at the same time?
